My Background
As a geriatric massage therapist for the last 13 years, I have had to face death head on many times. As an inevitable part of life, I have always been comfortable with supporting clients and their families in this realm. As a massage therapist, you form an intimate bound with your client and in the geriatric realm it also includes their familes.
This past year, I have been trying to figure out my next path of life. I love being a therapist however, since I have traveled with my table, I knew I couldn't continue this through my golden years.
Then the universe sent me many signs to my next direction.
In the Spring, my step-father, at 96 years old, took his final breath. Being that he lived across the street from me with my mother, I was able to be there every step of his home hospice journey until his passing. Since I had already known the process, I was able to comfort my mom and my step-sisters and explain what was going to happen. It actually sparked joy in me to be able to be there in such a meaningful way.
As I said the universe sent many signs, over the next few days and I decided to learn more to become a death doula and help others on this journey.
